That was very tough. I'd go as far as saying never again.
Brian did a great race finished in 4 hrs 38 mins at least I think
That's what he said( i was a bit dazed at the finished)
I finished in 5 hrs 7 mins totally drained had to walk part of the
Last 3.5 km run and it was flat!!
I'll let Brian do the race report

Paul Browne with basically no work done on the bike ran a great race to come 25th in the short course, only decided Friday night to do it I think!

Race report as follows

Another great weekend weather wise for the wicklow adventure race, if the weather ever was bad i reckon there would be a lot of DNFs. Check in was Friday night, this is a seriously well organised race with loads of marshalls and with 3 runs, 3 cycles, 4 transition points and a kayak it needs to be. I went for the 70's style clips and PJ went with the cleats, hard to know what to do but glad I went for the cleats because with the state you'd be in coming off the mountain it would be tough taking on and off and packing up shoes. I set off in the 8am wave with PJ in the 8.20am wave, first 9km Spink run is around the bowl of the upper lake in glendalough, stunning scenary as the climbing starts pretty much straight away. Runs are mostly on fire roads and board walks. After the initial very steep climb and nice fast decent it's down the miners path which is basically a km or 2 of boulders and rocks - very tough and technical and i struggled here a bit after passing a good few on the decent. Back into transition and off to lough Dan 15km cycle, pretty flat except for one little nasty climb. Calves were starting to cramp a bit at this stage, think those gels mess my salt levels up a bit, out with the dioralyte. Kayak went well, 2000meters in 15 minutes, lake was nice and calm. Back onto the bikes for a short 8km cycle, very tough in places with a Cat 1thrown in for good measure, not as bad as that flocker on Mt leinster but at this stage legs were really starting to feel it. 9km run on Douce, steadier longer climbs and decents, cramps in both hamstrings and calfs starting to make lift uncomfortable.
Backto transition and struggled to find my bike as really tighly packed but feeling a bit better. Up on the bike for the 29km spin back to Laragh and 2 minutes in my tire burst, severaly piddled off as I just wasn't concentrating. on with the tube with everyone flying by, bent the valve and half pumped the tire. Had to stop 5km up the road to pump it again. Up to the Sally Gap was really tough, very windy and felt like you were going no where. After this though it more or less downhill (didn't feel like it!). Back to Laragh and racked the bike and off for the final 3.5km run (run might be an stretching the truth!) along the beautiful green road - what the tourists thought I don't know, we where all a pretty pitiful sight with loads cramping! Never so happy to see a finish line. Great running by PJ and Paul. If the weather was bad for the race there will be carnage! Fresh fruit and water straight after the race was laided on along with tea/coffee and sandwiches, these races can be a little expensive but when you see what goes into it is actually good value I think when you see what some tris are charging.

My first thought after the race - absolute pig of a race, now a few
hours after it, I'll be back next year and no doubt PJ, Paul and hopefully a few others, it's definitly an experience.

(The west wicklow roar is on next month around blessington, not doing it this year but this is as good if not better)

(Apologies for the grammer, spelling, length etc I'm blaming cramp!)
