stupid question but would you run up a steep hill faster than on a mountain bike?

depends largely on the terrain i would say. Rough, technical ground would favour the runner, smooth fireroad the cyclist. and obviously depends on the ability of the two concerned.

I havehad a seed of plan for a little event for some time along the lines of orienteering except with pairs - a runner and an mtbe'er navigating a course. That may answer your question if I ever get around to it

would be good one long climb one half running, one half on the bike maybe
