Well folks I just happened to be down around Fermoy today so I did a lap of the course.

This is very interesting - I think it will divide the mtb racing community, some will love it some will hate it. It couldn't be further removed from Rd1 or even our course for that matter.

The lap is about 6km and all on open mountain - no laps in the dark wood here. Starts with a technical climb - rocky double track about 1km - reminds me a bit of some of the more difficult bits of the climb to the black banks, but steeper. Then basically flat but pedally, rocky double track, then some really nice narrow, rocky singletrack through the heather.

Then what is probably the best part of the course - about 1.5km of descent to the lowest part of the course. This is a rocky, loose descent - like a stream bed - where concentration will have to be at a premium - large loose rocks to be negotiated at speed. Fireroad climb then back to the start. Not sure that I'd like to tackle this on a lightweight carbon bike :(

I thought it was great. It's very wet in places, so be prepared for a soaking. But not muddy apart from one short section. It's not terribly steep up or down, but incessant. Overall it's very rocky - I can see lots of punctures and mechanicals. I think the guys who do well here will be the ones who are used to all-mountain type mtb'ing and know how to handle gnarly terrain

Looking forward to it MrC :D

heres a pic from the start of the descent:

How right I was.... :(

Well done to DC, Jim, Tully and Brian, it was an achievement just to finish today.

Bad luck to Damian, punctured when leading the S3's with 1km to go...

For me - well a picture tells a thousand words:

Well done to all, tough day out but great racing. Fair play to racing newbies Brian and DavidT on the your first NPS finishes. That was a tough course so be happy with your day's work. :D

Hard luck to Damien and DF.

On the plus side, DF's fancy new bike trailer drew many an envious stare!

Few rubbisy pics of DC and Jim from the finish line (some on the start of the 3rd lap, some finishing).

Jim is pointing at his nemesis Richard Lynch after crossing the line in one :)

Was surprised to see 38% of S4 not finishing. Carnage!
The 'glass half full' version is I finished - reality is a lot of hard training is needed.
Was racing against myself for the entire of lap 2. Saw no one. Probably cost me a bit on time, but not enough to make any difference.
Great experience though!

Lorraine - you would've been 3rd in S3 with no punctures.

Well done to Brian, DC and Jim.
DF and Damian - hard luck. You can carry all the tubes in the world but a mech hanger..
