Junior Triathlon Bootcamp - Huge success

Post by RGough »

Just thought I would give you a brief report on our hugely successful Junior Triathlon Bootcamp last week.

Monday morning started out in earnest with a group of nervous parents handing over their children to us, some a little unsure of what we were going to do all week and wanting to make sure that we going to take care of their kids properly! Monday, Wednesday and Friday were spent in Enniscorthy Pool and Tuesday and Thursday were spent in the Astro Active sports facility. On Monday and Wednesday the morning session consisted of a warm up session, followed by a dual session of swimming with Ivanna and a spinning class in the studio with Claire and I. It gave the guys a good insight into the way the body feels when coming out of the pool and getting up on the bike for a long ride. Our afternoon sessions consisted of pilates, yoga, strength and core training, stretching and nutrition. Tuesday and Thursday we were blessed with the weather so we were outside doing running drills, swim/bike/run bike/run/bike and bike/run transitions, relay sprints, endurance running and setting up your kit for transition. The kids got more excited as the week went on as we were building up to race day on Friday. We had three waves :D on Friday 10am, 11am and 12am where the guys were given a ten min warm up in the pool by Ivanna. Our race distance and set up was 300m in the pool, 9km on the gym bikes and then 3km on the treadmill. Some of the kids put in pretty impressive swimming times of 4 minutes 27 seconds for 300m, the best time on the bike was 14 minutes 55, and the best time on the run was 14 minutes even. Even though there were a couple of shin splints, twisted ankles, blisters and moaning we got through the week relatively unscathed! Thanks to Paul in Kennys for Bikes (Enniscorthy) Peter in Revolve Bike Shop (Gorey) and the lads in Amphibian King (Bray) for their sponsorship. Also thanks to John D and Brian O'S for the turbo trainers. Great feedback from all involved which is really encouraging for 2012! Bring it on. :D
