Bring on the muck.

With the triathlon season just about over its time for Wexford's newest running club to turn its attentions toward the fields. Cross country season is just around the corner and in no time the races will be coming thick and fast. With this being our first year and for many people their first C.C races, numbers will be key for the club, the more people we can get into races the stronger we will be (as an example Ferns are by no means one of the stronger clubs in the country yet they manage to pick up Provincial and National medals most years because they travel in large numbers). Most races will be 6 to score for the men and 4 for the ladies. In terms of gear you MUST wear club colours to score on a team, apart from that the only thing you need is footwear. For the early part of the season (until the rain comes) your normal runners will do just fine. Then you need something with a bit of grip, most people opt for spikes but unless you have a neutral gait and are around 7 stone I"d avoid them like the plague. A much better option are trail runners every single brand does one so you can stick with what you know. My personal choice are these the dogs bo***ks in terms of trail shoes http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/run/8/Inov-8_ ... 360039878/.

So on to the races the season kicks off on 19th Sept in Adamstown with a Ladies 3000m race and Mens 5000m there are also races for U9, U11,U13, U15, U17 if anybody wants to bring the kids along. more info here http://www.athleticswexford.com/index.p ... t&Itemid=4.
After that we have another open cross country in Kilmacow 26th Sept
Provisional date for the county novice is October 9th which every body is allowed run.
BHAA teachers race October 9th 2mile Ladies 4 mile Men http://bhaa.ie/evlist/event.php?eid=201 ... =0&range=2. You'll see more races at this link also, once things get going the bhaa will have a race every other week. There good in that they always have big numbers so more people to work off and a little different because you run for your profession not club team ie I'm registered to run for the printers.
October 16th Donadea Running Club Multi Terrain 10k Donadea Forest Park, Co. Kildare
Leinster Novice 24th October again all can run. (Its not like underage where you have to win or place in your county to progress)
County Intermediate Possible date October 31st
Once races get and venues get sorted I'll stick something a bit more concrete up.

Tom or is it Dena,

In relation to trail shoes you recommended, have you an experience of sizing. Currently have Nike structural triax 11 in size 11.5. How would they compare to trial shoes?

Looking forward to to giving this a shot
Are you running in Adamstown Tom?

Why would you recommend avoiding the spikes? - I bought a shiny new pair with yellow go faster stripes a few weeks ago
I would have thought that gait type & footware would be less important in a lumpy field than on a flat road?

And here was I going into retirement after Fermoy. Looks like retirement is over :( . Can't do this Thursday night but count me in for some of the races. Just post the relevant details here and I'm in. By the way I only have a trisuit, will I look out of place in one of those if I can't score without club colours? All these 'big boys', well I'm only size 9 in Asics, any idea how that would compare to UK sizes?

The fact that they have zero arch support means that anybody who over pronates is likely to get injured. Also because they have a very small heal it tends to put strain on your achilles. And finally because of all this lack of support their only for racing so you'll still need some kind of trail shoe for training. There might even be a pair on the market with go faster strips. :D

Some info about sizing here http://www.inov-8.com/Fit-and-Function.asp?L=26 and full inov 8 range http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Recommen ... G=PG1&L=26

Maybe the best thing would be to buy local for first time Amhibian King in Bray is good he'll do a gait test and let you run up and down the street in runners before you purchase. He also gives a 10% discount to all returning customers. http://www.amphibianking.ie/index.php?cPath=25

You could wear the red t-shirts from the triathlon as club gear. Once it has the club crest on it it counts.
