The Quarry

Post by DavidF »

I was up for a spin around my local track this evening. For those of you who don't know, it's in the wood around the old slate quarry in Ballyprecas. This is an area we usually ride on winter nights when its too cold/wet/windy to go to the big mountain.

The circuit consists of a fireroad climb, then a flat but technical loop in the woods (starting and finishing at the old pheasant pen) at the top of the hill, and then a steep descent back down through a piece of singletrack called 'Courtown' (it's full of beech, gettit ;) ). Full lap takes about 25 mins.

Usually at this time of year we do a recce up there to see what we need to do to get it ship shape for the autumn/winter. Thankfully all that's needed is a bit of strimming to cut back briars. I'm planning on going up there next Monday late afternoon weather permitting, if anyone is available to help it would be appreciated.

But the real reason i'm telling you all this is that when I was riding down Courtown this evening I realised that it was in the best, driest shape I have ever seen it. So i'd like to encourage everyone to get up there and have a go at it before it gets all muddy, slipperdy and sliderdy, cos it's one of the best bits of singletrack we have anywhere

Thats not Courtown by the sea but a sweet bit of singletrack/downhill on the aforementioned quarry hill.
