Re: what mtb for beginner?
youre on the right track, on the face of it that carrera would be a better bike than the treks you were looking at, the bikes the lads are talking about would be a good step up again.
As with most things the devil is in the detail. when you are looking at bikes look for
wear on the front fork uppers (silver or gold coloured lads that slide inside the lowers) any oily marks or discolouration will mean its a gonner.
wear on the drivetrain (cogs), as in should be semicircular if they look a bit oblong gonner
bearings worn out which will present as looseness or a slight knocking, wheels, pedal cranks, headset etc.
in an ideal world try and get one thats been sitting in a lads shed for a few years that was bought new with good intentions.

Re: what mtb for beginner?
The 3 bikes I've been offered on here so far seem to be ideal for what I've been told on here they all seem to have hydraulic brakes etc and in around what I think frame size I need I'll keep in mind what you said barry when I'm looking at used bikes Like yous have been saying I'll probably want to trade up after 6 months after I find my feet so to say so I'll keep whatever bike I get in the best condition I can so i Could get the most on a trade in there seems to be quite a bit of a stir up there any time I'm up that way
