Welcome!

You're in the right place, cos we all started out asking the same questions..
To start biking on around Mt Leinster, you need a decent hard tail with a good fork, and disc brakes is a must, in my view. Next then is a decent drivetrain, which in my view means 9 speed or better.

For those reasons I wouldn't consider either of the bikes you mention above. For something decent new you're probably going to have to spend upwards of €700..

Just so happens I have two really decent hard tails for sale, ideal for someone like yourself to get started. If you're interested drop me a line on 087 9793457, both are in showroom condition.

Thanks for the reply I'll be hoping to spend upwards of around €700 but I'm goin to use the cycle to work scheme as it suits me better to do it that way I used to have a trek 6000 and used it up there but then I got moved to Galway with work so I sold it but I'm moving back now and wanting to get back into it what would you recommend I'll proabaly be buying from kennys for bikes in enniscorthy

Id have to agree with DF there, I've experience of buying a low end hard tail a few years back when I started. The fork packed it in after about 8 weeks and the response I got from the bike shop when I explained where id been riding was "well its a mountain bike but not really a MOUNTAIN bike". We have come to term these as mountain bike shaped objects, spend 600 now and spend double that buying a proper bike in 6months time. The trek6000 you had would have been a superior bike to both of the ones you're looking at.
I would not do anything else until you have spoken to DF while it pains me to bestow compliments on him :D there is very little he doesn't know about mountain bikes.
I wouldn't discount second hand either, 1000 euro bike on bike to work costs you 500-600ish where 500-600euro can buy you a far superior second hand mountain bike and keep your bike to work for when you are spending the mega bucks on a full sus :D

^^^^

Mr Byrne speaks the words of wisdom..

if you're starting out....save your bike to work scheme...buy a decent second hand bike now and see how you go. You'll learn an awful lot after 6 months of riding, and be much better informed as to what to buy

Then use your bike to work to buy something really decent when you have your knowledge built up.

I can guarantee you that either of the ones I'm selling are significantly better than anything you will pay €1000 for under the bike to work scheme, for less than half the price ;)

Cheers
DF
