Jaysus Dempsey I'd have to train for a year before having a go in the Des Hanlon. Apparently one of the hardest road races around

I suppose given you're determined not to answer my question I'll have to go and give one of those Slipstream races a go myself ;)

41 resting heart rate, though that was a year ago or so.

Low enough average and max HR for the race. You need a few more 795ers along to "encourage" you I think ;)

Apart from this weekend, are there many other training races coming up?

Yes, will hold my hands up and say could try harder
Although the racing itself can be very stop start, and those little breaks that you get can be enough to recover your HR, but your legs are still mangled
But sure come along the next time and give me something to chase ;)

That's a savage pace you were knocking out though.. HR might just not be a good indicator of your effort.

For the philistines among us (me included :shock: )
RPE = Rate of Perceived Effort
FTP = Functional Threshold Power
LTH = Lactate Threshold Heart Rate

I mentioned this in a blog last year that it has been proven that FTP is a much better measure than LTH, but not all of us have Taxc Turbos with Power metres or more importantly a road bike equipped with an expensive power metres, as there is no point measuring FTP on a turbo if you can't apply it to race or outdoor training. So HR measurement is probably a more useful tool for the mere mortals than power.

I've never done an A4 race, so I probably can't comment, however by the sounds of John's blog, neither FTP or LTH would be of use. In Triathlons, where drafting is an issue, then both measurements are useful, but it seems that in mountain biking and road racing, sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

Great to hear you are road racing John, something I've considered for a long time. I may enlist this year. Looking at track racing too :o

Hey I just spotted this thread , most of you won't know me I'm new to the club and the forum but I have raced as an A4 then an A3 for the last few years so if any of you are considering doing any racing, be it local leagues or open races feel free to ask any questions you want . I have ridden most races in the country so will have a good idea of the routes and stuff.
Cheers
